Nicolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), the well-known Florentine thinker, has not rarely been the object of sharp distortions. This article, assuming that the above mentioned author introduced the conception of State into political thought, tries to examine briefly the relation between politics and power in his work. This leads us to the question of the use of violence in the political ground, a topic of great interest nowadays.||A obra de Nicolò Machiavelli (1.469 - 1.527), pensador florentino bastante conhecido, não raras vezes tem sido alvo de grosseiras distorsões. O presente artigo, partindo do pressuposto de que o citado autor introduziu a noção de Estado no pensamento político, procura examinar, sem se deter em minúcias, a relação entre a política e a força em seus textos. Isso nos remete ao uso da violência no plano político, assunto bastante pertinente, nos dias atuais.
