This article discusses, from a theoretical point of view, the paradoxical relationship between literature and society. On the one hand, it criticizes a reading of literature with a sociologizing bias disseminated by the culturalist critique, but tries to retrieve positive aspects mentioned by authors such as Mignolo, Moreiras, Polar and Bhabba. On the other hand, it proposes a reading of literarature that asks about what it means to represent when one is in the literary realm. Thus, it poses the idea of thinking on the basis of the concept of paratopia, suggested by Maingueneau in the early ’90s in the French Analysis of Discourse. In Cultural Studies, some concepts by Homi Bhabba are reconsidered, as they offer a theoretical point of view aligned with an idea of representation that does not take for granted a smooth or simplified passage from the literary text to the social or from the social to the text. Nowadays the relationship between society and literary discourse remains open. The 20th century has tried various theoretical solutions: literary structuralism believed in immanence, a post-structuralism crossed immanence and culture. Later on a certain literary critique seems to emphasize the documental aspect of literary works, giving up their aesthetical character and the differentiated conditions of social functioning that it creates. So, this article ends up being an invitation to reflect on and dialogue with thinkers from other areas of social studies who intend to deal with literary texts in their history, politics, sociology and culture works and who, with their theoretical background and practices, will be able to produce new reflections on the issue raised. Key words: literature, representation, society.||Este artigo interroga, de um ponto de vista teórico, as relações paradoxais que existem entre literatura e sociedade. Por um lado, critica-se uma leitura do literário com um viés sociologizante que tem sido muito divulgada pela crítica culturalista, mas busca-se resgatar aquilo que de positivo tem sido colocado por alguns autores como Mignolo, Moreiras, Polar e Bhabha. Por outro lado, apresenta-se uma proposta de leitura do literário que interroga sobre o que significa representar quando se está no âmbito da literatura. Assim, propõe-se pensar as relações paradoxais citadas a partir do conceito de paratopia, que surge no início dos anos 90 com Dominique Maingueneau dentro da Análise do Discurso francesa, e se retomam alguns conceitos de Homi Bhabha que, dentro dos Estudos Culturais, oferecem um ponto de vista teórico que sintoniza com uma idéia de representação que não supõe um funcionamento sem problemas ou simplificado da passagem do texto literário para o social ou do social para o texto. Hoje, a relação entre sociedade e discurso literário continua em aberto. O século XX, resumidamente, tentou várias saídas teóricas: o estruturalismo literário acreditou na imanência, um pós-estruturalismo cruzou imanência e cultura, e, depois, uma certa crítica cultural parece enfatizar o aspecto documental da obra literária, abrindo mão do seu caráter estético e das condições diferenciadas de funcionamento social que tal caráter acaba suscitando. Este artigo acaba também se transformando num convite à reflexão e ao diálogo com pensadores de outras áreas dos estudos sociais que pretendam trabalhar com o texto literário em seus trabalhos de história, política, sociologia e cultura e que, com sua bagagem teórica e suas práticas, poderão produzir novas reflexões sobre o problema colocado.
