O filme Armageddon destaca como personagens centrais a figura de homens comuns, perfuradores de petróleo, que salvam o mundo do choque de um asteroide. Analisando a formação histórica americana, percebemos que a iniciativa desses personagens é uma releitura do mito de fundação daquela sociedade, inspirada no Iluminismo e no Calvinismo. Nessa nova interpretação, o futuro dos homens depende muito mais de sua coragem e perseverança diante dos obstáculos do que de uma concessão divina, pois a tecnologia permitiu a superação dos limites de uma espécie já desencantada. A complementaridade do gênero na união familiar e afetiva representa a continuidade da espécie humana. O filme exalta a guerra como modo de construção da identidade americana e do “outro”, seja ele humano ou um “híbrido”. O desfecho da salvação do mundo concilia as dicotomias entre ciência como técnica e a afirmação de valores sociais tradicionais, estendendo esses valores para o vínculo humanitário entre as nações do mundo, definidas a partir do universo mítico do americano. Se o mundo aparece desencantado nas lentes da racionalidade científica, a salvação depende de uma reconciliação entre a ciência e o mundo da vida. Para salvar o mundo, são necessários homens que representem essa humanidade há muito perdida pelos cientistas.Palavras-chave: Armageddon, Iluminismo, Calvinismo.||The film Armageddon shows the figure ofcommon men, oil drillers as central characters whosave the world from an asteroid collision. Analyzingthe American historical formation we realized thatthe initiative of these characters is a retelling of themyth of the foundation of that society, inspired bythe Enlightenment and Calvinism. In this new interpretationthe future of men is much more dependenton their courage and perseverance in the faceof obstacles than on a divine concession becausetechnology allowed overcoming the boundaries ofan already disenchanted species. The complementarityof gender in family and affective union representsthe continuation of the human species. Thefilm extols war as a way of constructing Americanidentity and the “other”, be it human or a “hybrid”.The outcome of the salvation of the world reconcilesthe dichotomy between science as techniqueand affirmation of traditional social values , extendingthese values to humanitarian ties between thenations of the world, defined from the Americanmythic universe. If the world appears disenchantedto the lenses of scientific rationality, salvation dependson a reconciliation between science and theworld of life.
