Gottfried Helnwein is an Austrian artist known for his hyperrealistic paintings of children, in which he utilizes an obscure aesthetics and discusses the themes of violence and Nazism. This article intends to understand how these images act in society, arousing the debate about such subjects. For that, the cases of the watercolor Life not worth living (1979) and the installation Selektion (Ninth November Night), placed in Cologne, Germany, in the year of 1988, will be analyzed.||Gottfried Helnwein est un artiste autrichien, connu par ses peintures hyperréalistes des enfants, dans lesquelles il emploie une esthétique obscure et discute les thématiques de la violence et du nazisme. Le but de cet article est comprendre comment ses images se propagent dans la société, incitant le débat sur ses sujets. A fin de le faire, je propose une analyse de l’aquarelle Life not worth living (1979) et aussi de l’installation Selektion (Ninth November Night), réalisée à Cologne, Allemagne, 1988.||Gottfried Helnwein é um artista austríaco conhecido por suas pinturas hiperrealistas de crianças, nas quais utiliza uma estética obscura e discute as temáticas da violência e do nazismo. O artigo busca compreender como suas imagens atuam na sociedade, despertando o debate sobre tais assuntos. Para isso, são analisados os casos da aquarela Life not worth living (1979) e da instalação Selektion (Ninth November Night), em Colônia, na Alemanha, no ano de 1988.
