This article presents a critical dialogue of the writer Lima Barreto (1881-1922) with the singularity of Brazilian romantic novel writing which incorporates the feuilleton’s devices, the structure of news and information to entice the reader, illiterate. Resources of mediation that transforms the experience of language, and reading on cultural experience because it shapes values and sensibilities, builds and deforms identities, and sediments the urban imaginary-mass.||O artigo apresenta o diálogo crítico do escritor Lima Barreto (1881-1922) com a singularidade do romance romântico brasileiro, cuja escrita incorpora dispositivos do folhetim, da estrutura jornalística e da informação para seduzir o leitor, iletrado. Recursos de mediação que transformam a experiência de linguagem e leitura, em experiência cultural, porque moldam valores e sensibilidades, constituem e deformam identidades e sedimentam o imaginário urbano-massivo.
