A close observation of a printed page give us clues of the time in which it was produced. If the type, that ideal rectangle where the body, baseline, ascendants, descendants coexist remains unchanged, the elements of the page show considerable progress. Changes are related to aspects of the historical, technical and technological advances that stand between text, typographer, graphic product, and the reader. In the broad discursive field where meanings are negotiated, design reveals shared cultural practices, turning graphic object into reflections of its historical contexts. Given its relevance in letterpress history the focus of this work lies in the innovations that have occurred in the printed book, rather than ephemera.||Ao observar uma página impressa é possível identificar a época em que esta foi produzida. Se o tipo, aquele retângulo ideal onde o corpo da letra, a linha de base, ascendentes, descendentes coexistem permanece inalterado, os elementos que compõem a página mostram uma considerável evolução. As mudanças observadas estão relacionadas a aspectos do contexto histórico, técnica e avanços tecnológicos que se interpõem entre o texto, o tipógrafo, o produto gráfico e o leitor. No amplo campo discursivo, onde os significados são negociados, o design torna visível práticas culturais compartilhados, permitindo que o objeto gráfico seja espelho de seu momento histórico. Dada sua relevância na história da tipografia o foco deste trabalho reside nas inovações ocorridas no livro impresso, mais do que impressos efêmeros.
