Moving from the issue centered on the relation between two texts (the original and the translated ones), this article investigates translation as an important vector of cultural international exchanges, within which it can embody different functions, according to the conditions of transnational circulation of cultural assets. We gradually analyze the following aspects: the structure of space of cultural international exchanges, the kinds of demands (political and economical) that influence such exchanges, the agents of intermediation and the processes of importing and reception in the target country. The article reveals how effective the sociological perspective can be for the understanding of the translating phenomenon. Key words: translation; cultural international exchanges; literary field; editorial context||Afastando-se de uma problemática centrada na relação entre dois textos (o original e o traduzido), este artigo aborda a tradução como importante vetor das trocas culturais internacionais, no seio das quais ela pode assumir diferentes funções, de acordo com as condições de circulação transnacional dos bens culturais. São analisados, sucessivamente, os seguintes aspectos: a estrutura do espaço das trocas culturais internacionais, os tipos de exigências (políticas e econômicas) que pesam sobre tais trocas, os agentes da intermediação, e os processos de importação e de recepção no país de destino. O artigo evidencia o ganho que a perspectiva sociológica representa para a compreensão do fenômeno tradutório3.
