Teachers capable of acting in a distance learning online course must have the potential to develop actions in a responsible manner, enabling characterization of the scaffolding process in terms of its recognition as a teacher. The potential is determined by the skills developed during their working life, which makes their actions and their recognition by acting in a particular educational context. Their academic and professional experience is essential to survey the list of skills they have developed. The aim of this paper is to discuss, by means of bibliographical research, the importance of the process of identifying the skills developed by a teacher to act in a certain context of distance online education, considering his history of life. It is felt that this history determines the degree of freedom of action of the teacher in a particular context, since the professional experience expands the menu of potential actions and reactions in the decision process in different teaching situations in which the teacher is inserted, what it is important for the understanding of his potential as a teacher.||O mediador docente com capacidade para atuar em um curso a distância online deve ter potencial para desenvolver ações de forma responsável, que possibilitem caracterizar o processo de mediação docente em função do seu reconhecimento como professor. A potencialidade é determinada pelas competências desenvolvidas durante sua vida profissional, que viabiliza suas ações e seu reconhecimento ao atuar em determinado contexto educacional. Sua formação acadêmica e vivência profissional são fundamentais para o levantamento do rol de competências por ele desenvolvidas. O objetivo deste trabalho é discutir, por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica, a importância do processo de identificação das competências desenvolvidas pelo professor para atuação em determinado contexto da educação a distância online, considerando sua história de vida profissional. Percebe-se que esta história determina o grau de liberdade de ação do professor em determinado contexto, vez que a vivência profissional amplia o cardápio de potencialidade de ações e reações no processo de tomada de decisão nas diversas situações de ensino a que estiver inserido, definindo-se importante para o conhecimento de seu potencial como docente.Palavras-chave: Competência.
