Maria Firmina dos Reis, a writer from Maranhão, dared to write within the possibilities that the male-dominated, conservative and provincial society from Maranhão in the nineteenth century offered to the woman. Úrsula, published in 1856, is a work in which the writer adopts an abolitionist posture giving voice to the slave. She reveals in her narrative an abolitionist vein combined with the context of economic, social and cultural rights at the time, she denounced the lawlessness, violence and problems that involved the slavery black in a society par excellence slavery. Maria Firmina dos Reis demonstrates more clearly her ideas and her abolitionist anti-slavery discourse.
