The Eye of Hertzog(O Olho de Hertzog), a novel by João Paulo Borges Coelho, searches for the roots of the contemporary Mozambican cultural identity in the beginning of the 20th century,revealing how the historical conscience is one of the most important factors in the process of national and cultural identity formation. The aim of the present article is to analyse the (re)use of colonial discourse and the dialogue between colonial and postcolonial discourses, which is established along the novel's two parallel narratives.||O Olho de Hertzog, de João Paulo Borges Coelho, procura as raízes de identidade cultural do Moçambique contemporâneo nos inícios do século XX, revelando como a consciência histórica é um dos factores mais importantes no porocesso de formação da identidade nacional e cultural. O objectivo do presente artigo é analisar a (re)utilização do discurso colonial e o diálogo entre o discurso colonial e o discurso pós-colonial que se estabelece através das duas narrativas paralelas que constroem o texto do romance.
