This essay reflects on the role of poor free men in rural novels of the 19th century. From a point of view of the “fate of the poor” in Roberto Schwarz’s “A Master on the Periphery of Capitalism: Machado de Assis”, the essay attempts to analyze not only the centrality of this figure, but also its varied social standing in rural fiction.||O ensaio reflete sobre a figuração social dos homens livres pobres no romance rural do século XIX. A partir da abordagem da “sorte dos pobres” no estudo Um mestre na periferia do capitalismo, de Roberto Schwarz, procura-se analisar não somente a centralidade desta figura, mas também a sua posição social variada na ficção rural.
