Jung defined “archetype” as a set of primordial images arising from the successive repetition of the same experience and stored in the collective unconscious, a deep layer of the human psyche and innate to the individual. According to the author, it is not a new term, because it appears in Classical Antiquity as a synonym of “idea” in Plato. In 2007, Kellehear focused on trying to outline distinct archetypes of death throughout history by investigating social characteristics behind multiple attitudes toward finitude. The author argues that there were typical and dominant ways of dying at specific times, which preserved moral characteristics and were covered by styles of conduct at death. Based on the concept of Jung and the investigations of Kellehear, this article is intended to illustrate three archetypes of death from a brief compilation of images ”“ medieval tamed death, romantic death and modern wild death ”“ tracing possible dialogues between them and, finally, pose the following question: what would be the death archetype of the twenty-first century?||Jung definiu “arquétipo” como um conjunto de imagens primordiais oriundas da repetição sucessiva de uma mesma experiência e armazenadas no inconsciente coletivo, uma profunda camada da psique humana e inata ao indivíduo. Segundo o autor, não se trata de um termo novo, pois aparece na Antiguidade Clássica como sinônimo de “ideia” em Platão. Em 2007, Kellehear debruçou-se sobre a tentativa de delinear distintos arquétipos de morte no decurso da história, investigando características sociais por trás de múltiplas atitudes perante a finitude. O autor defende que houve maneiras de morrer típicas e dominantes em épocas específicas, que resguardavam características morais e eram encobertas por estilos de conduta na morte. Com base no conceito de Jung e nas investigações de Kellehear, o presente artigo destina-se a ilustrar três arquétipos de morte a partir de uma breve compilação de imagens ”“ a morte domada medieval, a morte romântica e a morte selvagem moderna ”“, traçar possíveis diálogos entre eles e, por fim, propor a seguinte pergunta: qual seria o arquétipo de morte do século XXI?
