The cult of the ruins instituted the beauty of theauthentic fragments, relativizing the ugliness ofmutilated or incomplete bodies. The sacred for the italianrenaissance humanists was a classic body reconstitutedmore for integrity and less for authenticity, where forthe classicists of the eighteenth century the mutilatedor incomplete body was artistically acceptable. Thefree assembly of the classical sculptures represents,for the italian renaissance, the authenticity of the nonauthentic.The preservation of mutilated bodies, in thelight of modern theories, is the historical return of thevalue of the “authentic”. Between the beauty, integrityand authenticity of the bodies, a free comparison isproposed between the concept of authenticity in thetheories of patrimony and the Aesthetic of the Ugly. Itbegins with the idea that the ugly is the incomplete,imperfect, deformed, or falsified.
