RESUMO
Seguramente, uma grande parte dos leitores de Jacques Le Goff vem se beneficiando tanto das amplas informações sobre a Idade Média Ocidental a que conduziram suas rigorosas pesquisas, como – e talvez principalmente – dos métodos interdisciplinares utilizados para realizá-las a contento. Visando a uma “História total”, que desse conta das “mentalidades” do Homem em seu psiquismo profundo e em suas relações sociais, o Le Goff dos primeiros escritos, nos idos dos anos 70 do século XX, deparou-se com a complexa questão do “subjetivismo”, naquela altura tão oposta à “objetividade” de extração positivista, conforme se esperava do historiador. Para driblar a questão, em seu intrincado relativismo, cumpre “fazer a pergunta correta ao texto em exame” – conforme uma das mais certeiras lições metodológicas que ele nos deixou.

ABSTRACT
A significant part of the readers of Jacques Le Goff surely continues to benefit not only from the ample informations about the Western Middle Ages provided by his rigorous researches, but also – and perhaps principally – from the interdisciplinary methods he used to adequately carry them out. Aiming at a “total History” that might account for the “mentalities” of men in their profound psyche and social relationships, Le Goff, in his first works written in the ‘70s, had to deal with the complex question of “subjectivism”, at that time so opposed to the “objectivity” of positivist extraction expected from the historian. To dribble the question, with its intricate relativism, it is necessary to “ask the right question to the text under exam” – following one of the most valid methodological lessons he left us.
