This work presents, comments and translates the text On architectural symbols (1854), written by the architect and theorist Gottfried Semper (1803-1879). Best known for his masterpiece Der Stil, Semper was in the midst of Victorian industrialisation when he wrote the text. It is a lecture given at the Department of Practical Art of the Schools of Design in London, where the author presents, among others, his considerations on architectural ornament, a theme that will be the subject of passionate theoretical disputes from then on and which at that time was mixed with the debate on style. It is believed that the translation and the reading are valid and timely not only for revealing the sophistication of the thinking of the time, but also for highlighting a theme that appears at the heart of the architectural debate today, that of ornamentation.||Este trabalho apresenta, comenta e traduz o texto On architectural symbols (1854), escrito pelo arquiteto e teórico Gottfried Semper (1803-1879). Mais conhecido por sua obra máxima Der Stil [O Estilo], Semper encontrava-se em meio ao ápice da industrialização vitoriana ao escrever o texto. Trata-se de uma conferência proferida no Department of Practical Art das Schools of Design de Londres, em que o autor apresenta, dentre outras, suas considerações sobre o ornamento arquitetônico, tema que será objeto de fervorosas disputas teóricas dali em diante e que na época misturava- se ao próprio debate sobre o estilo. Acredita-se que a tradução e a leitura são válidas e oportunas não somente por revelar a sofisticação do pensamento da época, como por igualmente pôr em evidência um tema que aparece no centro do debate arquitetônico hoje, o da ornamentação.
