The aim of this article is to discuss the strategies of dissimulation, that is, of disguising of the fictional nature of the literary text in the tales of horror of Machado de Assis. The article analyzes the suspense generated by different narrative resources and representations of the narration that characterizes the ways of fear production in the works of the writer.||O objetivo deste artigo é discutir as estratégias de dissimulação, ou seja, de disfarce da natureza ficcional do texto literário nos contos de horror de Machado de Assis. O artigo analisa o suspense provocado pelos diferentes recursos narrativos e representações da narração que caracterizam os modos de produção do medo na obra do escritor.
