A entrevista realizada com Antonio Arantes aborda questões relevantes para a compreensão do Inventário Nacional de Referências Culturais (INRC), o principal instrumento utilizado pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan) para a produção de conhecimento e gestão do patrimônio cultural imaterial. Coordenador de uma equipe multidisciplinar contratada pelo Iphan em 1999 para a formulação dessa metodologia, Arantes discorre sobre o percurso inicial desse processo e alguns desdobramentos posteriores. O resultado é um retrato adensado das questões logísticas, das decisões teórico-metodológicas e dos debates que permearam a criação e implantação desse instrumento de investigação e, indiretamente, as políticas de patrimônio imaterial implantadas no Brasil. O entrevistado reflete também sobre a necessidade de se proceder a possíveis revisões dessa metodologia frente aos resultados acumulados ao longo de 15 anos de sua aplicação.||This interview addresses issues that help understand the procedures adopted by Iphan, the Brazilian national institute of historic and artistic heritage, in identifying the country’s intangible cultural heritage. The INRC, as this methodology is presently known in Brazil and abroad, was designed in 1998/1999 by a research team directed by Arantes and it has been implemented in many localities since then. The dialogue with our interviewee offers an in-depth look at the working process that led to the creation of this investigative tool, it also includes reflections on theoretical and methodological issues, and the practical challenges faced during its creation. From his perspective, it is time for a critical evaluation of the experience accumulated over the last 15 years and update the current methods.
