By means of a literature and documental review, this work aims at providing an account of the São Paulo musical tradition and the rupture brought about by the 1922 Modern Art Week. Such rupture propelled the city of São Paulo and Brazil forward to and important cultural advancement, thus contributing to the critical understanding of Brazilian artistic aesthetics, mainly the one originating in São Paulo. It started from that milestone of traditions and breaches towards a new modernism rooted in folklore, in social, ethnic and nationalist music; and it built a national identity.||O objetivo deste trabalho é, através de uma revisão bibliográfi ca e documental, apresentar um relato sobre a tradição musical paulista e a ruptura provocada pela Semana de Arte Moderna de 1922, que conduziu a cidade de São Paulo e o Brasil a um importante avanço cultural, contribuindo para o entendimento crítico da estética artística brasileira, especialmente de São Paulo, a partir desse marco de tradições e rupturas rumo a um novomodernismo que partia do folclore, da música nacionalista, étnica e social estabelecendo uma identidade nacional.
