RESUMO: Este ensaio analisa as implicações históricas do primeiro grande romance de José Saramago, Levantado do Chão. Muito embora tenha publicado livros até pouco tempo, parece importante, diante do panorama atual, reavaliar as críticas desenvolvidas nesta e a partir desta narrativa ficcional. Para tanto, valho-me também de outras obras do autor, bem como de Verissimo e García Márquez, sem descurar do caráter original que a história portuguesa assume aqui. Propõe-se uma discussão sobre a representação do sujeito e a revisão de temas como discurso hegemônico, identidade, justiça e disparidade social, na busca de liberdade de expressão e da reavaliação de uma parcela da história portuguesa. ||This essay analyses the historical implications of the first renowned novel by José Saramago, Levantado do chão. I discuss the novel’s approach to the representation of the subject, as well as the fictional review of the historical hegemonic discourse, and the concepts of identity, justice, and social disparity as relevant aspects to achieve freedom of speech, and a new perspective in the history of Portugal. Even though Saramago has published books until recently, given late events in contemporary history, it seems important to take another look at the criticism Saramago developed in this work. With this in mind, I take a closer look on this novel, and compare it with other works by Saramago, as well as Verissimo’s and García Márquez’s seminal works.
