Machado de Assis' short story “The secret cause” (“A causa secreta”) brings together the history of Brazil and the very circumstances presiding over the narrative's outcome: a network of dialogic signals that maps images of a sadistic capitalism. The movements that weave the fabric of the text, alongside its own thanatographical perspective, allow for a critical stance towards the incipient slave and laboral relationships during the second half of the 19th century in Brazil. Such fact is aesthetically configured through a miscellany of thoughts: the narrator that makes the reader its object, the leaflet-like plot of a love triangle, and a meticulous pannel in which human beings and rats are part of Several stories(literal translation of the title of the book Várias histórias, 1896).||O conto “A causa secreta”, de Machado de Assis, aproxima a história do Brasil à s próprias circunstâncias que presidem a fatura da narrativa: uma rede de sinais dialógicos que mapeiam imagens de um capitalismo sádico. Os movimentos que enformam o tecido do texto, em consonância com a perspectiva tanatográfica que lhe é pertinente, facultam um posicionamento crítico das relações escravistas e trabalhistas incipientes na altura do Segundo Reinado.
