Com base na definição de educação como iniciação em tradições herdadas, este artigo visa estabelecer a educação para a cidadania com um foco no passado, em oposição às propostas em voga – educação por competências, pós-convencionalidade – que estabelecem esse foco no presente ou no futuro. Para isso, este artigo analisa a polissemia do conceito de cidadania, o impacto da ausência de limites entre público e privado para a definição de espaço público, o efeito da oscilação entre universalismo e comunitarismo para a definição de coletividade política, o que influi na definição de educação para a cidadania. Este artigo analisa ainda as diferenças entre formação – ???????? – e educação para concluir que apenas essa última pode existir no mundo Moderno. || Based on the definition of education as initiation into inherited traditions, this paper aims to establish the education for citizenship with a focus in the past, as opposed to the proposals in vogue – compétences, postconvencionnalité – establishing this focus in the present or in the future. Therefore, this article examines the polysemy of the concept of citizenship, the impact of the lack of boundaries between public and private for the definition of public space, the effect of oscillation between universalism and communitarianism to the definition of political collectivity, which influences the definition of education for citizenship. This article also examines the differences between παιδει?α and education to conclude that only the latter concept can exist at the Modern Age.
