O trabalho educativo foi um importante instrumento para as missões dos jesuítas, tanto na Evangelização do gentio, com uso da catequese como principal meio de propagar a fé cristã, quanto na construção de colégios. Para a análise das cartas assinadas pelo padre Manoel da Nóbrega foi usada a edição do Padre Serafim Leite, chamada Monumenta Brasiliae e publicada em 5 volumes entre os anos 1956 e 1968. Nessas cartas, o padre Manoel da Nóbrega expressa uma visão tipicamente jesuítica de educação, de sociedade e história, todas subordinadas à religião, entendida por ele como civilizadora.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Educação, História da Educação, Educação Brasileira, Século XVI, Jesuítas.ABSTRACT: This text discuss the mode of education is represented in the priest Manoel da Nóbrega (1517-1570) letters, first Jesuits Master in Brazil in sixteenth century. The Society of Jesus had an important education work in Brazil, allied to the Missions, since 1549. This Jesuits work, as indigenous evangelization with the use of catechism like primary means of spread the Christian faith and in the construction of colleges, is the basis of Brazilian culture. For analysis of letters signed by the priest Manoel da Nóbrega, was used the edition made by the priest Serafim Leite in Monumenta Brasiliae, in five volume, published between 1956 and 1968. In the letters, Manoel da Nóbrega expressed the Jesuit philosophy of education typical of the Order. In the letters can be noted the society and history vision, both subordinate to religion. The Jesuits letters were used to make up the Brazil image in Europe of 222 e-hum, Belo Horizonte, Vol.5, N.2, pp. 221-237(2012).
