O artigo busca desvendar alguns destes significados, enfatizando principalmente seus sentidos políticos.||During the decades of 1980 and 1990, the United States were the stage to intense “culture wars”. One of privileged battlefields in this struggle to define America was the public debate regarding the past of the American West and its significance for that turbulent present. Thus, in that context, rival narratives fought for legitimacy in the public space, with the American West becoming a synecdoche for the whole nation. The article aims to unveil some of these meanings, with a special emphasis on its political significance.
