This article analyses Horace McCoy´s They shoot horses, don’t they? and its translation into Portuguese from the perspective of thematic organization at clause and text level. Drawing on systemic functional Linguistics, it examines clause Themes and text hyper- and macroThemes in order to observe how they construct meanings which can be correlated to the theme of the novel and its affiliation to particular literary genre: hard boiled novels. Thematic choices in the original and translated texts are compared and conclusions are drawn as to the impact these choices have upon the overall meaning construed by the text. KEY WORDS: discourse approaches to translation – systemic-functional linguistics - thematic organization – hard boiled literature.||RESUMO: Este tabalho apresenta uma análise do romance They shoot horses, don’t they?, de Horace McCoy, e sua tradução para o português, sob a perspectiva da organização temática na ordem da oração e no nível supra-oracional. Com base no arcabouço teórico da lingüística sistêmico-funcional, são examinados os Temas oracionais, e os hiperTemas e macroTemas com vistas a observar a contribuição destes para a construção de significados passíveis de serem correlacionados com o tema do romance e sua afiliação ao gênero literário do chamado romance duro norte-americano. São comparadas as escolhas temátias do texto original e do texto traduzido e tecidas reflexões sobre o impacto dessas escolhas na construção do significado global do romance.
