The child’s relationship with open spaces involves several complex variables implied in the human development. Therefore, the understanding of such relationship requires methodological models with certain characteristics. This study aimed to identify research techniques that have been used in studies addressing children´s relationship with open spaces. For this, we analyzed the publications of two journals referenced in Environmental Psychology: Environmental Psychology and Children, Youth and Environment. The review comprised publications from 2002 to 2012 using the keywords: “children and outdoors.” Eighteen studies were selected and it was identified the prevalence of traditional techniques such as questionnaires, interviews and observation combined with techniques as photography, walking route and drawing. We discussed the adaptations, strengths and limitations of the techniques used with children. ||A relação da criança com os espaços abertos envolve múltiplas e complexas variáveis implicadas no desenvolvimento humano. Compreender esta relação, portanto, exige modelos metodológicos com certas particularidades. Este estudo objetivou identificar técnicas de pesquisa que abordam a relação da criança com espaços abertos. Para isso, analisaram-se as publicações de periódicos em Psicologia Ambiental, o Environmental Psychology e o Children, Youth and Environment, dos anos de 2002 até 2012 através dos descritores: “children and outdoors”. Obteve-se por resultado 18 estudos, nos quais se identificou o predomínio de técnicas tradicionais como questionário, entrevista e observação combinadas a técnicas como desenho, trajetos de caminhada e autofotografia. Discutiu-se sobre as adaptações, potencialidades e limitações das técnicas utilizadas com as crianças que usam os espaços abertos para suas atividades.
