Translation of the essay La Gymnastique rythmique et la lumière written by Adolphe Appia in 1912. The text was only published in 1932 in the magazine Le Rythme, the official correspondence bulletin of the Jaques-Dalcroze Institute in Geneva launched in 1909. In this essay, Appia takes up some concepts presented in hir work Music and Staging (originally published in 1899), bringing them closer to the pedagogical context of the Jaques-Dalcroze Institute of Hellerau, founded in Dresden (Germany) in 1911 and closed in 1914 with the outbreak of World War II. This is Appia’s only publication on the light-music-movement relationship on Dalcroze’s Eurythmics teaching. The translation is preceded by a critical presentation of the text, written in a very peculiar historical context that led editors of Le Rythmeto make significant interferences with the original manuscript.
