Resumo:
A devoção às almas do purgatório é um elemento chave das sociedades católicas. Ainda hoje são reproduzidos ritmos, crenças, e gestos que durante séculos ligaram o mundo dos vivos e dos mortos, a partir da crença neste terceiro lugar do além. Como objectos devocionais do quotidiano, as alminhas ou os retábulos das almas raramente surgem nas fontes históricas. Desde os anos noventa do século passado, a historiografia tem-se renovado: questiona-se a centralidade da fonte escrita e repensam-se metodologias e objectos de estudo. Historiadores começam a erigir uma história sem textos, a partir de correntes como a história das imagens que interliga a história, a história da arte e a antropologia. Assim, para a compreensão dos traços de permanência da crença no purgatório no tempo longo, será interessante analisar as suas imagens a partir de uma perspectiva histórico-antropológica.

Abstract:
The devotion to the souls in purgatory is a key element of the catholic societies. Currently, rhythms, beliefs and gestures that throughout the years made the connection between the worlds of alive and dead from the belief on this third place of the hereafter, keep being reproduced. As devotional objects from the everyday life, alminhas and altarpieces for the souls rarely appear on the historical sources. Since the nineties, there has been a historiographical renewal: there has been questioned the centrality of the written sources, and re-thinked the methodologies and study objects. Using trends like the history of images - which connects history, history of art and anthropology together - historians, start to build up a new history without texts. Using an historical and anthropological analysis, we will start from the images to understand the lines of permanency of the belief in purgatory in the long duration.
