This paper examines Guy de Maupassant’s novel Strong as death, in which the french writer narrates the life of the famous artist Olivier Bertin, painter of the portraits of the most beautiful women in Paris, who live a romance with Anne de Guilleroy, married to Mr. de Guilleroy. From the return of young Anette, the living portrait of the mother during her youth, the author reflects on the passage of time and its influence on passions, love and art. When reality contradicts the wishes of the main characters of the novel, who have aged over the years, they become nostalgic and begin to evade time, populating their own fantasies with images of an ancient beauty and happiness that were experienced in the past. In this way, the “loss of self” of the characters in the novel is analyzed, who recognize the loss of a part of their existence from which they cannot disconnect their libido, that is, a representation of themselves in the past that is kept idealized, whose relationship love was lost as an object of love.||O artigo analisa o romance Forte como a morte, de Guy de Maupassant, em que o escritor francês narra a vida do célebre artista Olivier Bertin, pintor dos retratos das mais belas mulheres de Paris, que vive um romance com Anne de Guilleroy, casada com o deputado M. de Guilleroy. A partir do regresso da jovem Anette, o retrato vivo da mãe durante a juventude, o autor reflete sobre a passagem do tempo e a sua influência sobre as paixões, o amor e a arte. Quando a realidade contradiz os desejos das personagens principais do romance, que envelheceram ao longo dos anos, elas se tornam nostálgicas e começam a se evadir no tempo, povoando suas próprias fantasias com imagens de uma antiga beleza e felicidade que foram vivenciadas no passado. Dessa forma, analisa-se a “perda de si” das personagens do romance que reconhecem a perda de uma parte de suas existências da qual não podem desligar sua libido, ou seja, uma representação de si no passado que é mantida idealizada, cuja relação amorosa se perdeu como objeto de amor.
