This article describes a very subtle type of centricity, found in Webern’s Opus 5, called axial symmetry. A micro- and macro-structural analysis of the work, concomitantly with the identifi cation of its symmetrical axis, constitute a theoretical model, which reveals the subtlety and refi nement of Webern’s fi rst atonal instrumental works. At the same time, this study inspires the application of the compositional techniques described here in new works of different aesthetic orientations.Keywords: Webern. Axial symmetry. Axis of symmetry. ||Este artigo descreve um tipo sutil de centricidade, encontrada no Opus 5 de Anton Webern, denominada simetria axial. Uma análise micro e macroestrutural da obra, concomitantemente com a identificação de seus eixos simétricos, compõem um modelo teórico que revela a sutileza e o refinamento encontrado nas primeiras obras atonais instrumentais de Webern, ao mesmo tempo em que inspira a aplicação das técnicas composicionais aqui descritas em novas obras de diferentes orientações estéticas.
