This article reflects on the possibility of photography to apprehend gesture as proposed by Jean Galard in the text “A beleza do gesto: uma estética das condutas”. Its start point is the argument that an act can only become a gesture when it is observed – and, if it is so, could the camera play the role of observer and photograph it as a gesture? In order to establish a theoretical approach on the subject of photography, we will invoke Roland Barthes’ essay “Camera Lucida: reflections on photography” as well as other secondary authors. At the end, a photo from Francisco Rodrigues collection will be analyzed under the light of the question “can the Photograph capture the gesture?”.||Este artigo reflete sobre a possibilidade da fotografia apreender o gesto, tal como tomado por Jean Galard no texto “A beleza do gesto: uma estética das condutas”. A pergunta parte do argumento de que um ato só pode tornar-se gesto quando observado − e, se assim for, poderia a câmera tomar a função de observador e fotografá-lo como gesto? Para pensar a fotografia, adota-se como base o ensaio “A câmara clara: notas sobre fotografia”, de Roland Barthes, além de outros autores que integram a discussão. Ao final, é analisada uma fotografia da coleção Francisco Rodrigues sob a luz da pergunta “pode a foto capturar o gesto?”.
