The thinking about the relations between cinema and theatre historically constitute two different moments: firstly, the directors and theoreticians of cinema tried to avoid any contact between filmic language and theatrical forms of representation, seeking, in this way, to establish cinematographic specificities; on the other hand, theatre was seen as an integrant part of cinema, functioning as base of some of the artifices of filmic language. In this article, our wish is to critically evaluate these questions, trying to theoretically investigate how these thoughts are articulated nowadays, and how the studies about cinematographic adaptation are concerned in establish specific analytical methods to the adaptation of theatrical pieces.||A reflexão em torno das relações entre cinema e teatro, historicamente, constituem dois momentos diversos: primeiramente, os diretores e teóricos do cinema tentaram evitar qualquer contato da linguagem fílmica com as formas teatrais de representação, buscando, dessa forma, estabelecer as especificidades cinematográficas; num outro extremo, o teatro foi visto como parte integrante do cinema, tendo servido de base para alguns artifícios da linguagem fílmica. Nesse artigo, nosso desejo é avaliar criticamente essas questões, no intuito de investigar, teoricamente, como esses pensamentos estão articulados ainda hoje, e como os estudos de adaptação cinematográfica estão preocupados em estabelecer métodos de análise específicos para a adaptação de obras teatrais.
