This essay looks into the magical origin of the term imago and its problematic relation to the real and illusory within a binary and morally connoted logic. Based on Durand’s image theory and benefiting from an analogy between Hal Foster’s Return of the real an Euripides’ Bacchae, a deeply rooted cultural fear of the image as other and schizophrenic denial of its power are revealed. An analysis of perspective as a legitimating tool follows, drawing directly from Hans Belting’s Florence and Baghdad, in which the origin of this typically western stance is traced back to the medieval Arab science. The distorted theory which the Italian renaissance championed had unforeseen consequences on western thought and lead to visuality as Nicholas Mirzoeff defines it in “The right to look”.||Este ensaio considera a origem mágica do termo imago e sua problemática relação com o real e o ilusório dentro de uma lógica binária e moralmente conotada. Baseando-nos na teoria da imagem de Durand e tirando proveito de uma analogia entre O retorno do real de Hal Foster e As Bacantes de Eurípides, revela-se um medo da imagem como outro e uma negação esquizofrênica de seu poder. A partir da obra de Hans Belting intitulada Florencia y Bagdad, na qual demostra-se que perspectiva renascentista surge de uma teoria óptica árabe não icônica mas científica, segue-se uma análise deste sistema de representação como ferramenta legitimadora. A teoria distorcida que o Renascimento italiano abandeirou teve consequências não previstas no pensamento ocidental e resultou na visualidade segundo a definição oferecida por por Nicholas Mirzoeff em “The right to look”.
