Este artigo aborda o desenvolvimento da Umbanda no Brasil e a analisa em três fases caracterizadas por: (1) 1850-1913 - `Nbandla; (2) 1913-1960 – A Umbanda Empretecida; e, (3) 1960-1990 – A Umbanda Embranquecida. Tal periodização esclarece os elementos de composição desta reli gião afro-brasileira e a relação com a c onstrução de identidades múltiplas num ambiente social repressor destas práticas religiosas.||This article approaches the de velopment of the Umbanda in Br azil it analyzes and it in thr ee phases characterized for: (1) 1850-1913 - `Nbandla; (2) 1913-1960 - The Umbanda Empretecida; e, (3) the 1960-1990 - Umbanda Embranquecida. Such periodização clarifies the elements of composition of this religion afro-Brazilian and the relation with the construction of multiple identities in a repressor social environment of these practical religious.
