Between 1939 and 1942 Brazil adopted a position of neutrality -- the so-called dependent neutrality -- with respect to war in Europe. But in August 1942 Brazil declared war on Germany and Italy. To understand both decisions we must go back to the 1930's, a time of acute competition between the United States and Germany for economic and political influence in Latin America. Divisions arose in Brazilian government and society, and as a result Brazil kept a pragmatic equilibrium between the two powers, exploring the best economic opportunities. However, from December 1941 on, after the United States entered the war, the co-operation with the American government turned Brazil into an increasingly belligerant nation, until the neutrality was formally abandoned in 1942.||Entre 1939 e 1942 o Brasil adotou uma posição de neutralidade - a assim chamada "neutralidade dependente" - com respeito à guerra na Europa. No entanto, em agosto de 1942 o Brasil declarou guerra à Alemanha e Itália. Para entender ambas decisões é preciso voltar à década de 30, um tempo de acirrada competição econômica e política por influência na América Latina entre os Estados Unidos e a Alemanha. Divisões surgiram no governo e na sociedade brasileira, e como resultado o Brasil manteve um equilíbrio pragmático entre as duas potências, explorando as melhores oportunidades econômicas. Entretanto, a partir de dezembro de 1941, após a entrada dos Estados Unidos na guerra, a cooperação com o governo americano transformou o Brasil numa nação crescentemente beligerante, até a neutralidade ser formalmente abandonada em 1942.
