RESUMOO presente trabalho tem como objetivo refletir sobre o processo histórico de edificação do Porto público da cidade de Pelotas-RS. A partir de uma análise reflexiva da bibliografia existente sobre o assunto e do cruzamento com fontes primárias de cunho jornalístico e arquivístico, buscaremos compreender quais os elementos que levaram a decadência dos trapiches particulares e a consequente construção de um porto público às margens do canal São Gonçalo na Cidade de Pelotas. Além disso, sua relação com as necessidades comerciais que emergiam diante de uma Pelotas em desenvolvimento urbano e social no início do século XX.ABSTRACTThis paper aims to reflect on the historical process of building the public port of the city of Pelotas-RS. From a reflexive analysis of the existing bibliography on the subject and the crossing with primary sources of journalistic and archival nature, we will seek to understand which elements led to the decay of the private warehouses and the consequent construction of a public port on the banks of the São Gonçalo channel in the city of Pelotas. In addition, its relationship with the commercial needs that emerged in the face of a Pelotas in urban and social development at the beginning of the 20th century.
