Zambezia, in Mozambique is filled with personal histories centred around women, which are not likewise reflected in officially sanctioned history books. Donas, female landowners that thrived in the region between the 17th and 19th century, are among the few women whom hegemonic history texts recognize as powerful. Thepresent article discusses ways women currently living in Zambezia recollect the Donas, and how their memories contrast with existing archival material. The collection ofmemories critically engages the established scholarships on the Donas, by bringing forth logics of remembrance that challenge, contradict, but also add to the establishedand accepted historical facts. ||Na Zambézia, em Moçambique abundam histórias centradas em mulheres, mas cuja proeminência não está refletida nos livros de história oficial. As Donas, latifundiárias que floresceram entre os séculos XVII e XIX são das poucas mulheres cujo poder está reconhecido nos textos de história. O presente artigo discute formas em que mulheres vivendo atualmente na Zambézia recordam as Donas, e como as suas memórias contrastam com material de arquivo existente. A coleção de memórias interage criticamente com o conhecimento erudito existente sobre as Donas, e trás lógicas de recordação que desafiam, contradizem, mas também adicionam a factos históricos estabelecidos e aceites.
