The article contains a critical discussion of some theoretical approaches currently employed in international relations to explain the international system after the end of the cold war. Since interdependence is the main notion used to describe the present world divided into state-nations, the author examines how realists and modernists deal with it. Three important contemporary issues are also discussed: the role of the state, military and economic power and the priorities of the international system after bipolarity.||O artigo discute de modo crítico algumas abordagens teóricas empregadas atualmente nas relações internacionais para explicar o sistema internacional pós-guerra fria. Sendo interdependência a principal noção utilizada para descrever o mundo atual, dividido em estados-nações, o autor examina como "modernistas" e "realistas" tratam o assunto. Três principais temas contemporâneos também são discutidos: o papel do estado, o poder militar e econômico e as prioridades no sistema internacional pós-bipolaridade.
