Through the metaphor between the direction of a automotive vehicle and art education are discussed three knowledge required for the practice of teaching in the visual arts: historiography, critical/curatorial and artistic production. In defense of the specific art in the Arts discipline, are listed reasons justifying the position that the art object can argue with quality and independently of other visualities issues inherent to the human condition. The article presents a bibliographical studies with a qualitative approach that seeks to support research investigations into teacher training of visual arts and from concepts specific artistic area. We conclude that the removal of these concepts would trigger a substitutionary education, palliative, putting art without clear assignments within the school curriculum.||Através da metáfora entre a direção de um veículo automotor e o ensino de arte são discutidos três saberes necessários para o exercício da docência em artes visuais: historiografia, crítica/curadoria e produção artística. Em defesa da especificidade da arte dentro da disciplina Artes, são elencadas razões que justificam a posição de que o objeto artístico pode discutir com qualidade e de maneira independente das outras visualidades as questões inerentes à condição humana. O artigo apresenta um estudo bibliográfico com abordagem de cunho qualitativo que busca fundamentar as investigações sobre a formação de professores de artes visuais a partir de conceitos específicos da área artística. Conclui-se que o afastamento destes conceitos desencadearia uma educação substitutiva, paliativa, colocando a arte sem atribuições claras dentro do currículo escolar.
