This essay discusses some historical and social aspects in which the realism, transplanted from Europe, emerged in Brazil, passing from a structure of sentiment to that of a dominant idea, adapting itself to the local conditions in order to perform specific functions dictated by the new context. Such functions are essentially connected with the construction of a specific idea of nation, which included the control of the social representations through literature.||Este artigo discute alguns aspectos históricos e sociais no interior dos quais o realismo, transplantado da Europa, chegou ao Brasil, passando de estrutura de sentimento a ideia dominante, adequando-se às condições locais, de modo a poder desempenhar funções específicas ditadas pelo novo contexto. Tais funções têm ligação essencial com a construção de uma ideia específica de nação, que incluía o controle das representações sociais por meio da literatura.
