This study seeks to discuss the paradox between a high quality literary production in Latin America and socioeconomic conditions that are backward and peripheral. The discussion opens with the writings of Marx and Engels on literary aesthetics where they address the relationship between base and superstructure, of art being independent of ends and the inconsistencies between the developmental capacities of art and the forces of production. Later, this study examines some specific cases which are related with such issue in Latin America: 1- The cultural plasticity found in several writers of our region, through the critical analyses of Ángel Rama and Antonio Candido, the research of Roberto Schwarz over the figure of Machado de Assis in Brazil, and the figure of Borges in Argentina through the critical study of Beatriz Sarlo.||Este trabajo pretende discutir la paradoja de tener en América Latina una producción literaria de alta calidad en condiciones económicas y sociales atrasadas y periféricas. El debate comienza con los escritos de Marx y Engels sobre estética literaria donde abordan la relación entre estructura y superestructura, la independencia de fines del arte y las incongruencias entre el desarrollo de la capacidad artística y el de las fuerzas productivas. Posteriormente analiza algunos casos específicos que tienen que ver con esta problemática en América Latina: 1- La plasticidad cultural que encontramos en los escritores de nuestra región a partir del análisis crítico de Ángel Rama y Antonio Candido, la figura de Machado de Assis en Brasil estudiada por Roberto Schwarz, y la figura de Borges en Argentina a través del estudio crítico de Beatriz Sarlo.
