The treatment given to history of Contemporary Africa in textbooks of 5 th to 8 th grade is the main subject of this article. Th e focus elected and the issues raised are articulated around a central consideration: how the texts, images and interpretationsmade by school books diverge or converge in relation to the so-calledimaginary Brazilian built on Africa and the Africans. As a general framework it is asuperfi cial analysis of the recent trajectories of the countries in African societies ina repeat of representations and stereotypes disclosed on the continent. || O tratamento concedido à história da África Contemporânea nos livrosdidáticos da 6ª a 8ª séries do Ensino Fundamental é o objeto principal do presenteartigo. O enfoque eleito e as questões levantadas articulam-se em torno de duas reflexões centrais: o quanto os textos, imagens e interpretações apresentadas peloslivros escolares divergem ou convergem em relação ao chamado imaginário brasileiroconstruído sobre a África e os africanos; e o quanto eles dialogam, ou não, com aprodução historiográfi ca sobre a África. Observamos de uma forma geral a existênciade uma análise superfi cial das trajetórias recentes dos países e sociedades africanase uma repetição das representações e estereótipos divulgados sobre o continenteno imaginário ocidental.
