This text has the aim of discussing aspects of the intellectual process that resulted in Lucien Febvre’s classical book Le problem de l’incroyance au XVIe siècle: la religion de Rabelais. It makes a supplementary discussion of the answers presented by the author (in terms of pointing out to flaws and weaknesses) and the alternatives that he offered (in terms of creation and usage of concepts) as the established ways of conceiving and writing history in the mid-twentieth century. The book is particularly revealing in relation to these aspects, especially when it comes to the specificities of language in the sixteenth-century literature. Beyond analyzing the principles of Febvre’s interpretative theory and the book’s impact on contemporary historical thought, this text intends to demonstrate that the work not only is not dead, but it is still extremely up-to-date.||O presente texto tem por propósito apresentar aspectos do processo de produção do clássico Le problème de l’incroyance au XVIe siècle: la religion de Rabelais, de autoria de Lucien Febvre. Em sentido complementar, discutem-se as respostas que o autor deu (em termos de apontar falhas e deficiências) e as alternativas que ofereceu (em termos de criação e utilização de conceitos), as maneiras consagradas de se conceber e de se escrever a história nos meados do século XX. São aspectos em relação aos quais o livro em tela é especialmente revelador, mormente quando se trata das especificidades linguísticas da literatura quinhentista. Para além da análise dos princípios da teoria interpretativa firmada por Febvre, e dos efeitos de renovação exercidos por sua obra, no plano do pensamento histórico contemporâneo, pretende-se demonstrar que o livro não está morto, e que continua a alimentar o interesse de leitores na atualidade.
