eoi/doi Deposit-Electronic Object Identifierhttp://eoi.citefactor.org/10.11248/ehum.v7i2.1430RESUMO:Este artigo aborda algumas atitudes diante da morte na cultura ocidental entre os séculos XVI e XIX, período marcado pela dúvida e pela inquietação, e ao mesmo tempo pelo impulso lúdico e pela teatralização da vida. Procurou-se salientar como a concepção dominante da morte pode ser percebida de formas semelhantes em cerimônias fúnebres, autos-de-fé e realizações artístico-religiosas, mostrando como as técnicas de preparação para a morte eram importantes numa sociedade dividida entre a fé e a razão, entre a religião e a ciência nascente. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: cultura funerária, arte barroca, representações da morte ABSTRACT: This article discusses the attitudes about death in the Western culture, between the 16th and 19th centuries, a period characterized by the so called baroque culture, whose main features were the doubt and the anxiety, and, at the same time, a ludic impulse and a theatrical vision of life. It emphasizes how the dominant conceptions about death may be found in the funerary habits, the public executions and punishments and the sacred artistic achievements alike, which demonstrates how the techniques of preparation to death were important in that society, divided between faith and reason, between religion and the beginnings of science.
