A metrópole e a vida do espírito, de Georg Simmel, é abordado como texto seminal da sociologia urbana e da análise dos comportamentos humanos em contextos metropolitanos. Estabelece-se uma relação entre a atitude blasé e o surgimento da figura do flâneur. Esta é tratada a partir dos contributos de Franz Hessel de finais da década de 1920 que retrata com algum romantismo o universo metropolitano europeu anterior à Segunda Guerra Mundial. A terminar, o texto interroga a existência da flânerie nas megacidades do sul global de hoje. O autor usa o recente relato de J. Seabrook para ilustrar como, passados cem anos, a metrópole de Simmel passou por profundíssimas transformações. Se se puder ainda falar de flânerie, certamente ela sofreu uma alteração radical da sua natureza. De tal modo que essa mudança implica a revisão epistémica da sociologia urbana.||Georg Simmel’s The Metropolis and Mental Life is treated as a seminal study of urban sociology and of the analysis of human behavior in metropolitan contexts. A relationship between the blasé attitude and the appearance of the flâneur is established. The latter is seen through Franz Hessel’s writings, in the late 1920s, which present a somewhat romantic view of the pre World War II in Europe. The article ends up by questioning whether flânerie still exists in today’s global South megacities. The author makes use of J. Seabrook’s recent writings to show the deep transformation Simmel’s metropolis went through in the past hundred years. If we can still talk of flânerie, it has certainly undergone a very radical change in nature which leads to an epistemic revision of the canon in urban sociology.
