Starting at an introductory and comprehensive view, this paper discusses the relations between art and design. Turning back the origins of the design just before industrialization, the eighteenth century, and proposing interpretations for different times consecrated by history of the design, towards the contemporary creations, this is a reflection on the use and symbolic meaning of the objects during a sketch of its history, offering the possibility to put the history of design in a wider history of art, as the history of visuality.Keywords: Design, history of design, design and art||A partir de uma visão introdutória e abrangente, este artigo pretende discutir as relações entre arte e design. Fazendo recuar as origens do design ao momento que antecede à industrialização, o século XVIII, e propondo interpretações para diferentes momentos consagrados pela história do design, em direção às criações contemporâneas, trata-se de uma reflexão sobre o sentido de uso e o sentido simbólico dos objetos, no decorrer de um percurso esboçado através do tempo, propondo a possibilidade de inserir a história do design numa mais ampla história da arte como história da visualidade.Palavras-chave: Design, história do design, design e arte
