Based upon the State Law 7663/91, for the hydrographic Basins of the Committee for the Sorocaba River and Middle Tietê (CBH-SMT) was installed on August 2, 1995. It treats of a new management of water resources and presents a new fact: the effective participation of civil society, the state and counties in decision making. The CBH-SMT is composed of representatives from: civil society and the state and county governments equally represented. To date, several actions have already been taken a survey on the situation of water resources, debates regarding the plan for lowering the river bed of Tietê and the creation of the APA of Ituparanga. ||Com base na Lei estadual 7.663/91, foi instalado o Comitê de Bacias Hidrográficas do Rio Sorocaba e Médio Tietê CBH-SMT em 02 de agosto de 1995. Trata-se de um novo modelo de gerenciamento dos recursos hídricos e que apresenta um fato novo: a participação efetiva da sociedade civil nas tomadas de decisão. O CBH-SMT é constituído por três segmentos: sociedade civil, estado e municípios, com igual representação. Até o momento já foram realizadas diversas ações, destacando-se, entre elas, a confecção do relatório de situação dos recursos hídricos, as discussões sobre o projeto de rebaixamento da calha do rio Tietê e a criação da APA de Itupararanga.
