The present work aims to highlight the contribution of Luís de Lima (1925-2002) to the development of modern theater in Brazil, namely his role as the first translator and director of the plays of Eugène Ionesco, considering data on the conditions and means by which the translations for staging were made and, in the theoretical scope, the approach of the theatrical translation at the level of the staging proposed by Patrice Pavis (2008).
Keywords: Modern theater, Theatrical translation, Luís de Lima.||O presente trabalho tem como objetivo evidenciar o contributo de Luís de Lima (1925-2002) para o desenvolvimento do teatro moderno no Brasil, nomeadamente o seu papel de primeiro tradutor e encenador das peças de Eugène Ionesco, considerando os dados acerca das condições e meios pelos quais se deram as suas traduções para as encenações e no âmbito teórico a abordagem da tradução teatral ao nível da encenação proposta por Patrice Pavis (2008).
