Resumo
Este artigo pretende caracterizar o poder real na Inglaterra anglo-saxã dos séculos V – IX, a partir da perspectiva do conceito de Chefia (Chiefdom), inserindo os reinos anglo-saxões entre as chamadas sociedades complexas sem Estado, em contraposição às monarquias feudais do Ocidente, baseando-se no poema épico Beowulf.

Abstract
This paper tries to characterise the royal power in Anglo-Saxon England during the centuries V – IX, from the perspective of Chiefdom’s concept, putting it among the called complex societies without State, in opposition to the feudal monarchies of the Western Middle Ages, based on the Anglo Saxon epic Beowulf.
