This article aims to present and analyze the Lima Barreto’s set of theatrical chronicles published from 1911 to 1920 on the newspapers and magazines of the Rio de Janeiro. We seek to insert his critique in the context of the Brazilian theatrical thought of the First Republic and, above all, in the debate about the creation of the national theater. This debate generally oscillated between the encouragement of the public power and the private initiative, the average taste of the public and the experts, the conscience of the delay of the Brazilian theater and the desire of the his update, the hierarchy of theatrical genders and the social hierarchy.||Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar e analisar o conjunto de crônicas teatrais de Lima Barreto publicadas de 1911 a 1920 nos jornais e revistas do Rio de Janeiro. Buscamos inserir sua crítica no contexto do pensamento teatral brasileiro da Primeira República e, sobretudo, no debate sobre a criação do teatro nacional. Esse debate oscilou geralmente entre o estímulo do poder público e a iniciativa privada, o gosto médio do público e dos especialistas, a consciência do atraso do teatro brasileiro e o desejo de sua atualização, a hierarquia dos gêneros teatrais e a hierarquia social.
