The objective of this paper is to investigate the categorial analysis created by Amie Thomasson and the ontological conception of Arthur Danto about works of art, showing the common ground and the differences between the two philosophers. The common ground is that both of them aim to develop an ontology of art that does notimply the exclusion of any empirical manifestation of art. The main difference is that Thomasson, unlike Danto, does not provide a definition of art. It is intended to demonstrate that the concept of “art world”, modulated by historical narratives, is what makes Danto’s theory more successful than Thomasson’s in order to apprehend the concept of work of art and to address the peculiarity of contemporary art.||O objetivo deste artigo é investigar a análise categorial de Amie Thomasson e a concepção ontológica de Arthur Danto a respeito das obras de arte, mostrando a base comum e as diferenças entre os dois pensadores. A base comum é que ambos pretendem desenvolver uma ontologia da arte que não exclua nenhuma manifestação empírica de arte. A diferença principal é que Thomasson, ao contrário de Danto, não elabora uma definição de arte. Pretende-se mostrar que o conceito de “mundo da arte”, modelado por narrativas históricas, é o que torna a teoria de Danto mais bem sucedida em relação à de Thomasson para a apreensão do conceito de obra de arte, além de mais apta para abordar a peculiaridade da arte contemporânea.
